Something I hear all the time is...
"Brooklyn just has such great self-esteem."
In the book I am currently reading, I learned about a thing called "Fair Market Value." The author talks about how at cattle auctions he didn't understand the difference between any of the animals. His father taught him a great lesson. The more you know about something, the more fairly you can judge its worth.
You know where this is going. Who knows us perfectly? God. Christ. They know absolutely everything about us. No one can judge us like they can.
They say that we are worth so so much. If they say so, why do we believe anyone else?
Do you think the people in the magazines know enough about you to make a call on how beautiful you are?
What about that guy you were interested in who didn't think you were worth his time? Do you think he knows you as well as Heavenly Father?
Those people who pick at every mistake you make. Do you think that they could possibly know you well enough to determine your worth?
The answer is no.
Where does my self-esteem come from?
My self-esteem comes from an inner knowledge of how incredibly important I am. My self-esteem comes because I can go to bed every night knowing I have done my very best. When we do our very VERY best, we may still experience disappointment. But we will not be disappointed in ourselves.
My self-esteem comes from the scriptures. From humbly applying the word of God. It comes from inspirational quotes, quotes that tell me it's OKAY to just be me.
Self-esteem comes from a choice. A choice to decide WHO will determine your worth. Having a high self-esteem doesn't come naturally in a world like ours, but it does come... when you put forth the effort.
I don't have self esteem because I've never been hurt or let down. I have self esteem because my trials have taught me what is most important, and who's opinion matters most. And I'll tell you this. It's not the world's.
